Soon after the dropping of the atomic bomb and the end of the War, the Japanese Peace Constitution was established. It is the only Constitution in the world which renounces war as a nation, the maintenance of armed forces and the use of force to resolve conflicts.
Recently, there have been movements to abolish this Constitution in Japan…. We ask that you energetically hold and support this Constitution not only on behalf of Japan but on behalf of all humanity in hopes that more and more governments in the future will follow suit.
We herewith enclose Chapter 2 Article 9 of the Japanese Peace Constitution.
(Excerpt from the Japanese Peace Constitution)
Chapter II: Renunciation of War, Article 9:
Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes. 2) In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.
